Mount Kelimutu is a captivating volcano situated close to the small town of Moni. This is a gateway to explore the wilderness in Eastern Indonesia, Flores. The colors of lakes change independently from each other caused by the oxidation-reduction status of the fluid of each lake and also different major elements, such as iron and manganese that triggered by volcano gas activity. 8 kilometres hike is needed to reach the summit. Catch the sunrise from an altitude of 1.639 meters and enjoy the landscape of three volcanic crater lakes in differs colors.

The best time to visit the Kelimutu craters lake is during the dry season, which is May to September. The temperatures around Kelimutu on average in November is around 27.2°C. July is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 24.8°C. However, if you start hiking early morning, the temperature is quite cold around 12°C caused by the wind.

  1. The volcano contains three summit crater lakes with three different colors. Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue lies the westernmost. The other two lakes, Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) are separated by a shared crater wall and are typically green or red.
  2. Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri is the largest lake with an area of 5,5 hectares.
  3. The lake which changing color the most is Tiwu Ata Polo. It was recorded that changing 44 times from 1915 until 2011.
  4. The last eruption of Kelimutu was 1968. However, the color-changing recorded the first time after an eruption in 1886.
