Kawah Ijen lies in eastern Banyuwangi at an elevation 2.250 metres. To reach Kawah Ijen's rim of crater, you should start from Paltuding and continue to hike up for three kilometres. The smoke of Kawah Ijen is very toxic, so you need to be in a healthy condition to explore this location. Hire a guide is also necessary for your safety. 

The best time to visit Kawah Ijen is during the dry season which spans from May to September. In the rain season, sometimes the volcanic activity of Kawah Ijen is getting higher makes the toxic gas become more dangerous. Due to this condition, Kawah Ijen usually closed for a couple of weeks or only allow visitors to climb until the rim of crater and close the hiking trail towards the crater where is the blue fire appears for safety reasons.

This is the most important information, Kawah Ijen always closed on the first Friday of the month to protect the ecosystem around the region.

  4. Along the hiking trail, you can see a sulfur mining operation. Miners usually load their bamboo baskets with 75 kilograms to 90 kilograms of sulfur and walk for three kilometres down the mountain twice a day.
