Borobudur temple is a ninth-century Mahayana Buddhist temple that lies in Magelang Regency. Located 20 kilometres from the city of Yogyakarta, Borobudur temple known as the world's largest Buddhist temple which has the most complete ensembles of Buddhist reliefs.
Borobudur temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circulars, topped by a central dome. This incredibly beautiful archeological site is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa.
The pilgrim journey begins at the base of the monument then ascending to the top through three levels symbolic of Buddhist cosmology: Kāmadhātu means the world of desire, Rupadhatu means the world of forms and Arupadhatu means the world of formlessness. The monument guides pilgrims through an extensive system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the walls.
Borobudur temple is good to visit all-year-around. But arguably the best time to visit Borobudur is in May, June, and September when visitor numbers are not at their highest. Most visitors come here during the sunrise, but see the sunset here also can be an alternative.
There are no known records of construction or the intended purpose of Borobudur. But according to the comparison of carved reliefs on the temple's hidden foot and the inscriptions commonly used in royal charters during the eightieth and ninth centuries, Borobudur was likely found around 800 AD. This corresponds to the period between 760 and 830 AD when the peak of the Sailendra dynasty rule over the Mataram kingdom in central Java. At the time their power encompassed not only the Srivijayan Empire but also southern Thailand, Indianized kingdoms of Philippines, North Malaya, and Khmer in Cambodia. The construction has been estimated to have taken 75 years with completion during the reign of Samaratungga in 825 AD.
