basic information

Here everything you need to know before visit Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are a group of three small islands situated in the north of Lombok. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air are popular destinations among divers caused by the tropical marine biodiversity that has good visibility all year round. Gili Islands not only offers a jaw-dropping underwater view, but every beach in Gili Islands has blue turquoise water covered by soft white sand which perfects for chilling under the tropical sun.

Lombok’s dry season spans from April to September, with days characterized by blue skies and sunshine. The months of May, June, and September are arguably the best time to visit Lombok when the weather conditions are idyllic but visitor numbers are not at their highest, it means the tourism site is not too crowded. Temperatures in Lombok are fairly consistent year-round, ranging from 26°C - 29°C.

Gili Trawangan labeled as the party island, this is the most developed island among the three. A multitude of dining and accommodation options can find here easily. If you want to escape the urban life then Gili Meno can be an alternative option. This island offers a tranquil atmosphere that perfect for a couple especially if you are on a honeymoon trip. Gili Air is the closest island to Lombok. Not really developed nor silent, Gili Air is like a combination between Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan.

history

During the Second World War, occupying Japanese forces used the islands as a lookout post and prisoner of war camp. Relics from this period include the remains of a bunker on the hill of Gili Trawangan and the wreck of a patrol boat submerged at a depth of 45 metres in the bay to the south of Gili Air. Now, this spot becomes popular among divers. The Bugis fishermen also used the islands as a stop-off location for their voyages around the archipelago. In the 1980s, the islands started to be discovered by backpacker tourists. This was influenced by the rise of tourism in neighboring Bali.
